That sounds just like Acanthomyops. Especially the odor. Might be fun to see if you can get a colony going from a queen and some Lasius pupae. You are bound to have some Lasius nearby to use as pupa...

...because of the aphid issue. But, if you are willing to put in the work to get a subterranean aphid colony going then you probably shouldn't have any difficulty doing the much lesser amount of work...
